This is the story of my whole trip to Leuven, all the way from Budapest, Hungary. As I had to bring a almost all my clothes, electronic devices and other personal belongings, and as I have always preferred travelling by train over most other means of transport, I had decided to embark on my journey to Leuven by train. It came in handy that I could claim some additional money added to my Erasmus scholarship that is awarded to those prioritizing green travel options. However, this decision meant that my trip was going to be about 14 hours long with three transfers along the way. I bought a universal interrail ticket<\/a> for the trip, which I highly recommend for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first stint of my journey was about 7 hours long, all the way from Budapest to Munich, where I managed to arrive by 11 p.m., on schedule. The route was relatively peaceful, but the train got quite crowded between Vienna and Salzburg. After we crossed the german border, however, the train got mostly empty, which could have been because of the late hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the main Munich train station I had a bit more than an hour to pass. This might not sound like much of a challenge, but even just moving around with two huge suitcases and a full backpack can prove to be quite difficult. The train station was in a pretty bad condition as well, which didn’t exactly boost my morale. However, once I got hold of a fresh panini and some refreshing beverages I was ready for the next stint of the trip and the next challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luck was not on my side, however, as my next train was already late before I even got on it, and it would proceed to accumulate a delay of more than an hour along the way. It was supposed to be a peaceful 6 hour ride from Munich to Cologne, where I would have had about 40 minutes to transfer. As this was in the middle of the night, my plan was to sleep at least a bit on the train, but the growing delay proved to be too stressful, so I ended up barely resting. Fortunately my luck turned at just about the right time in the last hour of the route, as my train managed to recover some lost time, and we reached Cologne 5 minutes before my transfer train departed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trip from Cologne to Liege was a fast and uneventful one, the only highlight being that the conductor didn’t want to accept my ticket at first, but ultimately we managed to work out the problem. I was a bit surprised to find out that at the Liege train station there were barely any english signs, so I had to use my limited french knowledge to find the last piece of the puzzle, my ride to Leuven. After an eventful 14 hours I arrived in the city just after 6 a.m., tired, but hopeful of the future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
